MAKE A DIFFERENCE
The Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre (BHRC) in Durban was established in June 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown. The Centre was established to provide a suite of harm reduction services to homeless and low-income people who use drugs. The BHRC is very low-threshold, with almost no barriers to accessing services. It is the first of its kind in South Africa, and as a result it is now being recognised by state and non-state actors as a model for community-based harm reduction service provision. The Centre is also a platform for advocating for harm reduction services, and a space of training excellence for medical and mental health professionals with an interest in drug use disorders.
The homeopathic services that have been offered at the Bellhaven Harm Reduction
Centre since August 2021 include complete medical assessment and homeopathic
treatment of a variety of health concerns.
The Centre, through its interventions, provides a platform for healthy living, life normalization, and quality of life improvements. These quality-of-life indicators are multiple, and include: reconnection with significant others; adherence to chronic medication; self-care; radical reduction in negative encounters with the criminal justice system; opportunities for income generation; and the rebuilding of a sense of self.
