“Here is a South African project that seeks to transform the lives of people and cities, through care, compassion, placemaking and persistence. Bellhaven should without a doubt be a model for harm reduction and a key part of the future of inner-city regeneration across South Africa.”
- Rashiq Fataar, Director of Our Future Cities

About Us
The Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre (BHRC) in Durban was established in June 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown. The Centre was established to provide a suite of harm reduction services to homeless and low-income people who use drugs. The BHRC is very low-threshold, with almost no barriers to accessing services. It is the first of its kind in South Africa, and as a result it is now being recognised by state and non-state actors as a model for community-based harm reduction service provision. The Centre is also a platform for advocating for harm reduction services, and a space of training excellence for medical and mental health professionals with an interest in drug use disorders.

LATEST PROJECTs

These quality-of-life indicators are multiple, and include: reconnection with significant others; adherence to chronic medication; self-care; radical reduction in negative encounters with the criminal justice system; opportunities for income generation; and the rebuilding of a sense of self.
